Is this a legit conversion or some backyard weld job?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I have no comment, it looks like someone grafted a trailer to the front of a pickup, and pulled the rear drive shaft and stuck it permanently in 4wd to create FWD.

It’s definitely a conversion. I’m not sure how good of a conversion, though. It’s quite literally an auto carrier that was welded to the truck frame...which actually does look pretty nice. I mean the FWD is a dead giveaway that this truck likely started life as a normal pickup. :)

Probably legit. This trick (4wd -FWD) has been done more times than you can count professionally - it’s an accepted way of making a hauler.

Dunno, but I’d drive it.

Following up, there’s even a British example. There were a whole line of SIII Rovers with a hydraulic drop tail.

They state it is FWD running off the front transfer case... for some reason I don’t think it was meant to do that CP for sure

Also handy for moving seaplanes around the lot.

It looks like that’s a boat trailer welded to a GMC.

Some even started with FWD vehicles...
The neat thing about these Citroens (many converted by Tissier) is that the Hydropneumatic suspensions let the bed droop all the way to the ground, almost completely removing the need for ramps.

It does mean that there’s a dead drive yoke on the back of the transfer case or a cover plate, but this trick has been done before. A lot. You could ask if the front drive section of the T-case will handle full engine power, but if they disable low range, the front internals are good to way higher torque than they’d see in FWD only.

Definitely a conversion, although it looks like a well done conversion. Not worth $12k though. You can get a pretty stout roll-back truck for a lot less than that.

relevant to this conversation. FWD 4wd vehicle
I was having the rear DS rebuilt so I drove around in FWD mode for a while. Did not like.

I know this trick has been used before, it just looked almost too well done to be a back yard job, but at the same time seems a bit sketchy to be legit

What price? I didn’t look

There are a lot of small shop trailer makers out there, and I don’t think the buy-in for trailer-making is all that high. It’s very possible this was done at a trailer-maker’s shop when they realized they could resell something like this with a quick turnaround and one of their existing trailer jigs. Materials are pricey, but overhead isn’t that much, so being able to use ready capital to buy a truck to make a couple or a demo model wouldn’t have been hard. Professional, but not
that
professional.
